Generally, a property owner has a duty to maintain his premises in a reasonably safe condition in order to protect and prevent injury to persons. If an injury occurs because of the dangerous or defective condition in which property is maintained, a claim for damages may be made. Damages may be "economic losses," such as medical expenses, loss of wages or lost earning potential, and miscellaneous expenses. Damages may also include "noneconomic losses" such as pain, suffering, inconvenience, physical impairment and disability, and physical disfigurement.
